5 Top Tips for Teachers Who Want to Stay Inspired in 2019

There couldn’t be a better time to feel inspirational than the start of a new year. In fact, one of the most rewarding parts of teaching is inspiring others. However, we know that at times teaching can be a difficult job and some days you can feel a bit humdrum. But don’t worry, we can help! At Simply Education we’ve got 5 top tips to help you stay inspired in 2019.

1. Talk to Others

If you’re looking for fresh ideas, a great place to start is by talking to other people. Everyone has their own way of doing things. Even if you have very different opinions, a fresh perspective may be just what you need to inspire your next great lesson plan.

2. Listen to a Podcast

The number of podcasts available are on the rise (Apple Podcasts now feature over 500,000 active podcasts) with podcasts covering anything from comedy, to business, to teaching. So whether you want something funny to listen to on your way home after a long day or you’re looking for some new ways to engage your students, podcasts can be a great help.

We understand with such a large variety, it can be hard to find what you’re looking for so we’ve listed a few good ones for you to check out:

  • The Educators from BBC Radio 4
  • The PE Umbrella
  • The Physics Teaching Podcast

3. Take Breaks

Studies have shown that taking regular breaks and getting a good night’s sleep is vital for your brain to be able to process problems and replenish your mental reserves. Stepping away for 5 minutes to eat a snack or have a cup of tea will allow your brain to rest. This can prevent you from feeling ‘burnt out’.

4. Do Something Creative

If you’re lacking in inspiration, try doing something creative like painting, colouring or listening to music. Creativity is like a muscle, if you exercise that muscle it will get stronger.

5. Attend an Event

Why not try going to a teaching event or CPD course? You could discuss lessons and strategies with other teachers who may help you find the inspiration you’ve been looking for. At Simply Education we offer CPD courses throughout the year, with many of them being free of charge for registered candidates. These courses give you a chance to connect with other members of teaching staff, share ideas and develop your educational skills further!

As well as our own CPD courses, we have found some external teaching events going on in 2019 which you may be interested in - they’re even free to attend:

  • Designing educational escape rooms for HE – March 19th (Eventbrite)
  • Striking the right chord – June 27th (Eventbrite)
  • Elizabethan Treasures: Miniatures by Hilliard and Oliver and Only Human: Photographs by Martin Parr - March 15th (National Portrait Gallery)

We hope these helpful tips will be just what you need to start the year off right and keep that inspiration flowing all year long. Keep an eye on our blog for more helpful tips and fun activities!
